The eagle of Khan Asparuh
0 lv.
At the end of 1972 the world is shocked by a new discovery – gold is found on the
shores of Varna lake. Subsequent excavations find out that an ancient necropolis
from the Chalcolithic period is located at the place. On an area of approximately 7500
square meters 294 graves are discovered and nearly 3000 gold objects with a total
weight of 6 kilograms. Just one grave has more gold than the all the gold of that era
found throughout the world. In addition to the many gold ornaments, various small
figures of idols and talismans – anthropomorphic (resembling human figure) and
zoomorphic (animal) have been found in the necropolis. Such as the applications from
grave № 36 representing stylized images of an animal head with the horns of a bull.
Having an imitation of pearls along the periphery they served as a decoration for
clothesThe Varna necropolis dates back to the Copper-Stone Age (eneolithic). It is
believed to have been used for 150-200 years, at the end of the fifth millennium B.C.
The objects found in the necropolis precede those found in Egypt and the Middle East and it is impossible to compare them. The influence of the Varna Bay civilization over the birth of the European culture is doubtless.
